i do
i have ghosts that follow me
not ghouls and goblins
rather, people,
old memories
i see them in a car on the highway
or in an aisle at the grocery store
always lurking in the shadows
ready to strike when i’m most insecure
i don’t believe in real ghosts
like a person under a sheet that haunts you
i think what most people are afraid of
are their past selves,
reflected through an image of a memory
of someone they used to be
i think i’ll always have ghosts
maybe everyone does
if only we could see other peoples ghosts
then maybe we’d understand
everyone has insecurities
or something that haunts their subconscious
then maybe the world would be a little more compassionate
if we learn to be kind to our ghosts
to ourselves
then maybe they’d go away
but that seems impossible
i haunt myself every day
i am a ghost
