the fault

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,

But in ourselves, that we are underlings.

Julius Caesar - William Shakespeare

Fate Vs. Free will.

Something I struggle with. Is our life predetermined, or do we have the ability to change our fate?

I don't believe in fate. I've said that before. But sometimes, it's hard not to. It feels like I'm not in control.

My favorite author (whom I've mentioned before on this platform) John Green, author of The Fault In Our Stars, wrote about this subject eloquently. His book describes the story of two cancer patients who are able to act upon their own free will, yet they are bound to face their eventual deaths. It shows that there is something that already exists in our fate, but we are independent to do certain things to change it.

That's how I feel most of the time. I can do certain things in my life. But there's already that preexisting determined fate that lies ahead.

So why is this my plague?

I am an underling, Brutus. The flaw does not lie in my character. I can do all I want to change. But rather the fault is in my stars, an allegory which here personify stars as the fate that affects the lives of humans. My plague lies in the dying stars.
